miraDry
Microwave-based nonsurgical underarm treatment for sweat, odor, and hair
About This Treatment
miraDry is a nonsurgical treatment that heats the deep dermal-to-subcutaneous junction where underarm sweat glands are concentrated using microwave energy. US FDA clearances cover primary axillary hyperhidrosis, permanent reduction of unwanted underarm hair, and reduction of underarm odor when used for hyperhidrosis treatment.
It is well recognized in Japan and the US and is often chosen by patients seeking a longer-lasting option than daily topicals. It is a localized axillary treatment, not a therapy for generalized sweating or other body sites.
Mechanism of Action
Microwave energy is focused at the dermal-fat interface of the axilla to thermally damage eccrine glands, apocrine glands, and nearby follicular structures. Surface skin is protected with cooling and suction while the gland-rich layer is targeted.
Indications
Expected Results
Treatment is usually planned over 1-2 sessions to reduce sweat, odor, and underarm hair. Comparative studies and longer-term follow-up show durability beyond 12 months, making it a practical longer-lasting localized treatment compared with topicals or injections.
Clinical Evidence
Risks & Side Effects
Swelling, tenderness, numbness, subcutaneous tightness, and bruising are common but usually transient. Rare risks include burns, prolonged sensory change, asymmetry, and uneven residual hair; use outside approved areas is not recommended.
